How Convenient: The Deadliest Bird Flu Outbreak on Record Broke Out in February, of 2022, Contributing to the High Egg and Poultry Prices Today
Like the coronavirus—we may never know the source of the most recent bird flu pandemic that has devastated the egg and poultry industry.
I’m not saying it’s a conspiracy theory, but…the timing is sus.
Did someone in a Wuhan wet market accidently buy a chicken instead of a bat? “Oops. Well, I guess we won’t be having bat soup tonight. Who’s in the mood for chicken pot pie?”
All joking aside, and to be clear—bird flu is not harming people. But it is highly contagious (100% contagious, say experts) from bird to bird, and the 2022 bird flu pandemic is a huge factor in today’s inflationary status on eggs, chicken, turkey, etc.
According to the Wall Street Journal, over 43 million egg-laying hens have died this past year. U.S. egg inventories were 29% lower in the final week of December than at the start of 2022, according to the Agriculture Department. The shortfall sent wholesale prices of Midwest large eggs to a record $5.46 a dozen in December, according to research firm Urner Barry.
