LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
Howzit, Private Eye?
Are we friends?
The reason why I’m asking is because a Substack article that will be in tomorrow’s Sunday Stack Attack got me thinking about this online digital world we spend so much time on versus the “real world.”
I think you will enjoy reading tomorrow’s Stacks, but this one called “We Are Not Friends” is a good stack that makes you think about the time you spend online and how fruitful your online relationships are compared to your friendships in the physical realm.
I’ve gotten to know a few subscribers here, many through their own Substack articles. Writers like Mickey Z. (we’ve talked a bit through email), Teresa L., Ray Horvath (we spoke by phone!), Dana Houser, Nick Sorrentino (I interviewed him on this podcast once), Tereza Coraggio, Toxicanadian, Kathleen Taylor, Barry “Bear” Goss…these and others are real people (not bots) that I’m getting to know here on News Detectives.
Are we close? No—let’s be honest—we are not besties. However, seeds are planted, connections are made, and we add value to each other through Substack and perhaps our online “friendship” will one day extend beyond the digital realm.
You never know.
In the future, I hope you’ll consider leaving a comment now and then. Some of you do, but many News Detectives have not yet appeared in the comments. I know this is typical for blogs in general—most readers don’t leave a comment. But we writers love to hear from subscribers—we are like old-school disc jockeys who are on the radio, but we don’t know if anyone out there is listening unless you call us to make a song request or say hi.
Some of you have a lot to offer here. Comment sections can benefit subscribers and visitors when the comments expand on the topic, bringing additional insights to readers or adding entertainment.
I encourage you to drop in and speak “your truth”—not just a “good article” type of comment—let me know what you think. Share your experiences. Tell me what I missed. Express why you disagree or have a completely different theory.
Who knows…maybe we could be friends.
Cheers,
Matthieu
