LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
Recently, I posted these thoughts on social media:
Imagine if you will…
A social media platform that did the unthinkable.
No algorithm.
Their news feed contains all your contacts posts in chronological order.
That’s it. No manipulations. No small group of friends dominating your newsfeed.
I often wonder why this doesn’t exist…is it not as good of an experience as it sounds?
I would like to at least be given that option to find out for myself.
But alas…no platforms offer this.
Eureka! I think we finally have one.
Substack!
It dawned on me that we essentially do have this on Substack—a platform that’s a combination of blogging and social media—where you can see all the posts of those you “follow” in chronological order using the Substack app or desktop.
I’m not saying Substack doesn’t have an algorithm. It probably does. How it works is unknown to me. I have not seen anything written on Substack’s algorithms.
If you happen to know something about Substack’s algorithms or know of an article somewhere covering this topic, please drop a link in the comments or share what you know.
I still feel really good about this place we call Substack. I don’t see users complaining about censorship or shadow banning or getting put in Substack jail.
None of that.
So, I’m going to feel grateful for Substack today. I’m glad this platform is in my life.
Cheers,
Matthieu

MEMES & CARTOONS
This meme blew my mind.
The lithium and cobalt mining story should be front page news.
Al Gore said this rock would be underwater back in 2005.
On the article about the Oregon high school requiring kids to write about sexual fantasies, it's part of the Our Whole Lives curriculum, which originated with the Unitarian Universalists in 1999:

I think the original intent was probably benign, but here in 2023 the implications are increasingly nightmarish.
